SKIING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

It is quite fascinating to see people slide away on ice. Have you ever thought it would be cool to learn skiing? Here is everything you would want to know about skiing. Did you know that Skiing, more than a sport it is, is also a means to travel on snowy mountains? Let’s learn more.

HISTORY OF SKIING

A “ski” refers to “split piece of wood or firewood”. The origin of this sport is traced back in China and is seen to be practiced for more than 100 centuries. Early skier’s used a long spear or a long pole to ski. Until the 19th century, skiing was used as a means of transport and slowly became a recreational activity or a sport.

EQUIPMENT’S USED IN SKIING.

The following types of equipment are used when skiing.

• Skis- On one leg, the skier wears a longer ski for sliding. On the other leg, a shorter ski is worn for kicking.

• Boots and bindings.

• Helmets and ski suits

• Ski goggles

• Skiing gloves

• Poles.

ski

However, if you are a beginner, don’t go for expensive fancy clothes. If you carry a winter jacket and waterproof snow pants, you are good to go. A pair of winter gloves is necessary as well.

SKIING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS:

1. A ski is designed based on a person’s height and weight. Do not borrow snowboards or skis from another person. Though a full skiing suit is expensive, do not miss out on the essentials like the gloves and ski helmets. These are worth buying.

2. Do not wear clothes that absorb water. A simple nylon windbreaker would help too.

3. Do not ski without proper supervision. Do not go alone. Always, partner yourself with at least one other person. At the same time, there is danger going with a large group of people too as they can force you to go on a steep terrain you are not comfortable with.

4. First, learn the basic technique of turning, wedging and the transition from flat ground to steep terrain. Learning this is a must before you decide to get yourself a pair of skis straight.

5. Check the terrains difficulty level before you decide to go skiing. Here are some signs to look out for: The Green circle represents the beginners. The blue circle represents intermediate skiers. Black diamonds are for the much-advanced skiers.

6. Taking a map along can help you with the directions. In case you get injured on the slopes, the map or a compass can help you find your way back.

7. Look out for the weather. Do not go skiing if there is a warning for a snowstorm. Two to three days after a snowstorm is fine.

8. Skiing causes you to lose a lot of water from your body through your breath and can lead to dehydration. Carry ample amounts of fluids with you.

9. Lastly, research a little bit and choose a suitable skiing resort that may offer an excellent skiing package at a cheap cost. The package would also include a ski rental kit. This may be an excellent cost-cutting technique.

So, happy skiing!!

The girl who was afraid of the storm: new book by Mazzi

The title has something evocative, magical. But as in all the books of Mazzi, emotion does not lie because then, on the page, you can see the authenticity of a true story, that of Antonietta called “Neta”, another figure (in the author’s bibliography) of that remote Italian alpine province on whose stage characters and events of great history move. All told in the unmistakable style, slightly veined with  melancholy and flashes of contagious comedy, that readers have learned to appreciate and recognize in the Ossola writer. The book is presented Wednesday, December 7, 2011 (18 hours) at the Grossi Library in Domodossola (VB, Italy).

We read from the cover of “The girl who was afraid of the storm” (Editions Interlinea, pages 160, € 18.00): The adventurous and almost legendary story of Antonietta (Netta), as beautiful as Liz Taylor, and Franco called “Ranca”, sfrusìn and partisan of the eighth Matteotti, mother and father of Giuliana Sgrena. To their lives and those of their families are intertwined the small history of the Val d’Ossola, with the epic struggle between smugglers and financiers, and the great history of Italy, from the retreat of Russia to the partisan struggle, to the Liberation, until arrive at the kidnapping of Giuliana in Iraq. A novel that is a precious testimony of a people and a border valley.

Benito Mazzi , journalist, writer and scholar of alpine traditions, has always lived in the Ossola valley Vigezzo, where he set many of his books, published with several publishers (Rizzoli, Fabbri, Priuli & Verlucca, Ediciclo, Casagrande) and often translated abroad. Among the volumes of fiction published by Interlinea we remember In the gypsy sun. Stories of smugglers (1997, selection of the Strega prize), A man who counts (1998, selection of Bancarella Sport prize), When barking the fox (2001), The eagle of Tappia in the Giro d’Italia (2003, with Marco della Vedova) , The invincibles of the snow (2005, with an intervention by Mario Rigoni Stern) and, for children, the story of Christmas Il sogno di Gibo (1996). This is his 46th book.

A SONG OF THE BOOK
In the Delina tavern, singing and dancing were not allowed. If a half-blasphemy escaped to a patron, the woman, weighing in at a steady 120 kilos and lumberjack’s arms, gently lifted him up and deposited him on the steps outside the door. A few years after the opening of the tavern – there was still Giuanìn, her husband -, they had taken away the license to rescue a young smuggler injured by a burst of finance. It was night, crying with pain, the tapino, out on the street, lost blood and asked for help. Without hesitation, even aware of the risk that ran, Delina and her husband had transported him home giving him first treatment. The day after, the Giuanìn had rushed to the doctor’s office to take the doctor to Santa Maria Maggiore. The complaint for aiding was taken immediately:
At the outbreak of World War II, Delina again had to close its doors. The Osteria degli Amici, by superior decision, became the barracks of the border militia. The geraniums in the windows were replaced by sinister loopholes and the owner, evicted with her daughters, in turn evicted the woodsmen, taking their place in the little house under the road.

Private exploitation of hydroelectric power: the case of Devero

Yesterday was held at Alpe Devero, in the upper Val d’Ossola (Province of VCO – Italy), an interesting meeting-laboratory concerning the so-called “case of hydroelectric power plant” titled “Love water and call it by name”. In summary in recent months the community had come to know of a hypothesis of construction of a control unit between Devero and Crampiolo (in a context of naturalistic interest) for the private exploitation of hydroelectric energy. This was followed by a civil mobilization that led to the collection of thousands of signatures. The petition opposed the project for various reasons, including the high environmental impact and the method, legal but conducted quietly, without involving local communities.

The meeting held on Saturday 10 December at Alpe Devero set itself the goal of drawing attention to two increasingly current and interconnected themes, the production of energy and the protection of the environment. The full hall (one hundred people) and the contents emerged, allow you to talk about success. Also the local political representation (transversal to the camps) has shown to have its territory at heart.
The project of the new control unit in Devero is a striking example of how a fundamentally good idea like that of renewable energy sources can be transformed into detestable economic speculations to the detriment of the environment and how the exploitation of an energy source renewable energy may have unacceptable environmental costs and therefore produce energy that is no longer “clean”. As always, therefore, it should be stressed that it is not the merit of things that makes the difference but the method.

In itself the merit, the content, is environmentally friendly (a hydroelectric power plant), but the method by which the project was carried out, does not seem to be . This is why the work of LIPU has been compared, which tackles the issue of respect for watercourses very well, fundamental for the survival of a territory like that of Alpe Devero, with a questionable project of exploitation of water as energy source in a protected area, completing everything with data and numbers on the hydroelectric in the VCO, ignored by many.

The meeting was divided into 3 parts: the first concerning the “casus belli” of the new control unit in Devero with a brief case history and description of the project, by the Pro Devero Committee, followed by the analysis made by the naturalist Paolo Pirocchi, of the valuable environmental characteristics of the sites involved as well as of the project’s lack of design compared to the natural components; the second saw the presentation by Massimo Soldarini of Lipu of the documentary produced within the Parks in Rete project, directed by Marco Tessaro “Loving the waters and calling them by name – Aquatic environments in the Verbano Cusio Ossola”; the last part, edited by Amelia Alberti of Legambiente, focused on the data, current and planned for the future according to the new provincial directives,

“A super positive result of the day – said Anna Proletti of Pro Devero , one of the people who for a few years has been working for the protection and enhancement of the Alpe Devero – which, moreover, was beautiful with the sun shining on the snow during the day and the full moon in the evening that lit the alp of its most magical light “. Excellent moderation by Rinaldo Lampugnani who gave way to the speakers to intervene in a comprehensive and incisive. “We have greatly appreciated – concluded Proletti – the documentary Amare le acque and call them by nameproduced by Lipu under the direction of Marco Tessaro. “Too bad, we comment, for a lukewarm reaction by the Bacenese, surpassed in this by many other valley dwellers and locals coming from everywhere.” It will be necessary to let the Province know published by Amelia Alberti of Legambiente – that all these people present here today at Devero, added to the five thousand petition signatories, are worth more than a handful of water fees. ”
Initiatives like yesterday’s at the Alpe Devero, beyond the practical results, it is the testimony of the fact that there is an attentive enlarged community and a critical attention to things that will prevent the taking of unilateral decisions of this kind into general indifference. In light of the above, the headline of the Linea Verticale association sided with the civil society and with the signatories who opposed the construction of the control unit according to the methods envisaged by the current project .

Patagonia: Della Bordella and Bernasconi, two Spiders on the Egger

After last year the two Ragni di Lecco, Matteo Bernasconi “Bern” and Matteo Della Bordella, had already tried to get their hands on the inviolate west face of the Torre Egger (2685 m), in Patagonia, this year the two are left to try and close the accounts with this beautiful spire. The presentation of the adventure in the words of Matthew and the update of December 29, 2011 (the last until today).

Matteo Della Bordella, a young climber from Varese that Linea Verticale knows well, is protagonist in these days of an attempt, together with his climbing partner, also Ragno di Lecco, Matteo Bernasconi, on the west of Torre Egger where he had already “stuck his nose” ” last year. Here are the words with which Matteo presented the vertical journey he has taken on since the second half of December: “From the technical point of view the biggest news from last year is that we bring the portaledge we want to fix to the base of the wall so as to avoid every time approach, hoof and snowfield. And then we have a little ‘more time available, in the sense that we have planned two months (but it could be more or less, who knows).
For the rest, place and goal are always those. As the wise men say, the mountains are always there, they do not run away, so we hope to find the Egger Tower again this year. In addition to the Torre Egger it would be nice to find all our material on the wall, but this is another story, let’s say that for safety we will still take all the material up to the Circo de Los Altares, then we’ll see. Last year I had some ideas about how Patagonia was and what to expect, but it was just ideas, since I had never been there; but now I know exactly what awaits me, I think and I hope to be more prepared both mentally and physically than technically, then you will see it once there if they are or not.
Well, compared to last year

I also hope not to go hungry in truna, rather we say to spend very little time in truna …

My ideal way: 30 shots, all hand cracks, variable inclination, from the 6th to the 7th , and then 1 shot with a boulder on plates, well protected by excellent friends and then 15 meters of fingers slit up into the chain, 8a, then a bit of ice at the end for good Berne … All the way in free and without bolts of course, 5 days of stable weather, temperature 4/7 degrees, sun and zero wind. It seems easy to say, but not in Patagonia; it is useless to go there with this false expectation, here at the end we go to fight, to confront a very challenging mountain, I am interested in climbing these 1000 meters of rock, climbing free if possible, but first of all climb!
And in any case, going again to this place that has remained as it was to Mother Nature created it, trying to climb these walls, in the same way as Paolo Crippa and Eliana De Zordo did, is already something in itself exciting. Here … I wish that, unlike Paolo and Eliana, our Torre Egger also had a return, not just the going (touch … :-)) “.

Update of December 29, 2011: it seemed that Matteo Bernasconi and Matteo Della Bordella were at the base of the Torre Egger in truna, but the situation was not very clear also because of the difficulty of communication with satellite vehicles. Then the morning of 29/12 came the first encouraging news: the two continued their ascent to the summit of Egger: after the hoof and the 8 pitches passed last year another 5 shots were opened. The Colle Lux is now closer and making the accounts should be about 250 meters before getting there which represent the key part of the ascent being mostly overhanging. Once at the hill the climb should continue on mixed terrain. The two later fell as the weather worsened with gusts of wind up to 160 km / h but it seems that the next “ventana” was already scheduled for January 2nd. Today is 4 … Will they be alive?

With Franz Nicolini the great alpinism at the Cai of Omegna

Friday 20 January Franz Nicolini inaugurates in Omegna the 2012 season of the “Moriggi Combi Lanza” Mountaineering and Ski Mountaineering School with the presentation-screening of the film “Libero di concatenare” which documents the exceptional summer 2008 venture with which, together with Diego Giovanni and, in part, with Mirko Mezzanotte, completed in 60 days the dream of Patrick Berhault, the most loved transalpine climber in history: the ascent of all 82 4000 of the Alps in a single journey.

The meeting with the multi-purpose alpinist and mountain guide Franz Nicolini, organized by the Cai Intersection School “Moriggi Combi Lanza” of Verbano and Cusio in collaboration with our Vertical Line Association, is the inaugural moment of the SA1 courses (ski mountaineering 1) and AG1 (alpinism 1) of 2012 of the same Intersectional School. The presentation of the company with which Nicolini has concatenated the 82 peaks of four thousand meters of the Alpine arc in 60 days making the transfers “by fear means”, that is on foot, by bike and on skis, as well as being an exciting moment of comparison with the peak mountaineering of our time, it is also

a training course for those who are about to approach this fascinating vertical world.

A rare event on Friday 20 January in Omegna that will allow the inhabitants of Verbano – Cusio – Ossola, and not only to enthusiasts or future school participants, to meet one of the world’s vertical stars. Belonging to the generation following that of Reinhold Messner, Nicolini has some eight thousand behind him, the participation at the highest levels of the main ski mountaineering competitions in the world, the opening of countless routes (real masterpieces of mixed rock) in Italy and throughout Italy. ‘abroad. The all-encompassing of 4000 of the Alps came after the concatenation of all 3000 meter peaks in the Dolomites. Not just an exploit but a creative realization, a vertical adventure full of emotions.

The meeting is held at the headquarters of the Cai of Omegna, via Comoli 63 (Province of the VCO) – h. 21:00 – admission free.
